We have weaknesses and passions and defects deeply rooted within us. Many are hereditary. All of these are not cut off with a convulsive movement or with impatience and heavy sorrow, but with patience and perseverance, with care and attention.
The road that leads to perfection is long. Pray to God
to strengthen you. Face your falls with patience, and after quickly getting up,
run and do not stand like children, at the place where you fell, crying and
mourning inconsolably.
Watch and pray so that you do not enter into
temptation. Do not despair if you constantly fall into old sins. Many of these
are both strong by nature and by habit. However, with the passage of time and with
diligence they are overcome. Let nothing despair
you.
Saint Nektarios, the miraculous bishop of Pentapolis,
Egypt
