Prayer is the guardian of sobriety; it curbs anger, suppresses pride, cleanses from resentment, drives away envy, abolishes injustice, and corrects impiety.

Prayer is the strength of bodies; it brings joy to the home, grants favor to the city, provides strength to authority, gives victory during war, ensures peace, reunites the separated, and maintains the united in place.

Prayer is the seal of virginity, the fidelity of marriage, a weapon for travelers, a guardian of those who sleep, courage for those who are awake, it brings euphoria to farmers, and it grants salvation to sailors.

Saint Gregory of Nyssa
